As one of the founders of PWRC Inc., it has been personally rewarding over the many years to see the club become successful at meeting the rowing needs of our community. Youth, senior, college, high school members who are novices, intermediate, and advanced rowers...getting together on the Occoquan River each Summer and Fall for fun, fitness, and competition. I feel very lucky to be a member of PWRC and extremely privileged to be given a part in its continued development while advancing the reputation of Crew in Prince William County.

Where have all the meters gone? I am a converted gym rat, “coaxed” into erging by Michael Heisey and Alex Torres. Now, after four years of rowing, I am still swept up in the eternal chase for a good set, a quick roll up and a long run. The comraderie, the competition, the calluses – who could ask for more? It’s a great sport made even more rewarding by the great people with whom we row.

I've been a member of PWRC since 1995. Watching my daughter cox the Girls' Freshman 8 got me interested in the sport, not to mention I can hear the Regattas from my house. My daughter and son both competed in crew for Woodbridge High School. My daughter won Gold Medals at NOVAs, Stotesbury and Nationals. She also coxed for the Men's team at Ohio University. What I love about crew is being out on the water, especially early morning. I also love the exercise it provides, the teamwork, strategy and competition. When not rowing for PWRC, I also scull a single. We're blessed to have a really great body of water to row on. The Occoquan provides long stretches of no current/no obstructions (natural or man-made) water to row on. Great for training and competing.

Thanks to PWRC and the Raw Knucks/Novice program I got to find out that rowing in a real boat on the water is really better than Erg Class or watching from the shoreline which I did many afternoons as I grew up in Seattle (Lake Washington, Green Lake and at WWSU - Lake Whatcom). I have found that rowing really is an awesome way to stay in shape since I no longer have the Marine Corps to push me to stay in shape. But more important are the friends at the Boathouse. I look forward to many more years of rowing, great friendships and supporting PWRC.

Learned to row on the Severn way too many catches ago. After years with the eight in the high rack, a youngster asked me to join PWRC so starboards can rule again. Now I have a hard time keeping my eyes in the boat as I get distracted being a civilian Marine, woodworking, and re-rigging an old house.

Started my rowing career on the erg at Gold's gym 7 years ago and went to the water and was hooked. Loved rowing.

I used to watch the crews out on the Potomac and longed to know how it felt. I attended a Learn to Row day with PWRC and 5 years later I am still loving every minute of it. Coming back every year to prove that starboards rule. Sometimes we are even allowed to sit in stroke seat.

I learned to row through PWRC and I am now in my 10th year with the club. When I first started I wondered how I'd manage to find the 6 hours per week for practice; now those hours are the highlight of my week and I wish there were more. I'm sad when winter approaches and our season is over. Rowing to me is much more than a sport, more than just a hobby. There is something about being in a shell, feeling the rush of water underneath, enjoying the sunrise, noticing the egrets, the herons and other wildlife - it is such a welcome respite from the rest of my hectic day. And I love the Occoquan - it is a dynamite place to row and a beautiful place to spend time. Although I didn't start rowing until in my 40's, I fully expect to row the rest of my life.
