The Occoquan
This is obviously just a crude sketch of the Occoquan with the landmarks highligted. If you're new to the Occoquan, you may not know what is meant when a coach tells you to row to Jacob's Rock. Landmarks
The following are the commonly used landmarks with their history/background and distances. The cove is where Oxford boathouse sits and what we like to call home.
Going Down River
- Painted Rocks
- This is the area of rocks where local crews have painted their colors/logos. This is about 1/4 to 1/3 of a mile from our cove.
- Sandy Run
- Home of OBC, George Mason, area Fairfax crews. Sandy run is 3/4 miles from our cove and about 1/2 a mile distance from Painted Rocks.
- The Bleachers
- The bleachers toward the end of the sprint race course.
- Race Course
- The course used for sprint races. High schools race 1500 M, colleges 2K, and masters 1K.
- Powerlines
- The powerlines cross over the water before the sprint start.
- Occoquan Dam
- The dam above the town of Occoquan.
Going Up River
- Jacobs Rock
- Big rock on the corner. This is 1 1/4 miles from our cove.
- Fountainhead
- Fountainhead Regional park. This is 2 3/4 miles from our cove.
- Ryan's Dam
- Up approximately 1/2 mile from Fountainhead. This is 3 1/4 miles from our cove.
