Where do I park?
Please park in the upper parking lot, near the playground. There is no fee for parking at Lake Ridge Park & Marina.
I have never rowed before, is that a problem?
No. Attend one of three Learn to Row days offered each spring and learn more about the club, learn how an erg works, and have a chance to go out in an eight-person boat (for about 15-20 minutes) with experienced rowers. We also offer the Adult Novice Camp for individuals who have never rowed before. The Adult Novice Camp teaches participants the basics of sweep rowing. Individuals are teamed with experienced rowers and coxswains, who guide them through 6 building-block lessons. There is also the Novice Program which focuses on technique, basic skills, and the ability to work with others in the boat. Try one or all of these 3 programs, we are always excited to share our love of the sport with others!
Do I need to know how to swim?
Rowing takes place on the water, and while falling out of the boat is very unlikely, it is possible. Therefore, when registering for any rowing program, each participant must confirm that they are able to swim 100 meters and tread water for 2 minutes.
How long does the season last?
The season begins the first Saturday of June and ends with the last local Head Race (Head of the Occoquan) in early November.
Do I have to race?
No.
What should I wear?
You should wear shorts/sweats (spandex type and bike shorts are great!), a t-shirt, and athletic shoes. When we get on the water in the fall chilly weather, wear warm clothes (sweats, jacket, hat). BEWARE of baggy bottoms when we get on the water…they get caught in the sliding seat.
Are there showers or a locker room at the boathouse?
No. There are Port-A-Johns available.
Where do I store personal belongings while rowing?
The boathouse is locked during practice, however, many people have access to it. It is best to leave anything valuable at home.
What happens if there is inclement weather?
We row on the water in the rain, the cold, and the heat, but if there is thunder and lightning or it is very windy, the coach and members may meet at Gold's Gym and practice on the rowing machines. Your coach or team captain will contact you.
What happens if I can't make practice?
For the sake of planning purposes, if you know you will be late or cannot make a practice, please email, call or text your coach or another member. You may also call the Oxford Boathouse phone number at (703) 491-5754.
